I am sure there WAS a meaning to Halloween just as there was to Christmas. By that I do not mean a greedy way to sell merch, candies and whatever.
So ya, I agree with Mr. Flower. I do not know what it is anymore.

As for the event itself, it has no cultural background here so it is very underground. There were at least two or three attempts to make it bigger but they ended with stores aggressively selling candies and... ""scary"" stuff. So people voted against it.

Instead, we pay respects to the deceased. Visiting graves, helping those who were left alone and so forth.
Happens it is around the same dates as Halloween elsewhere.

I think mexico has an interesting tradition, leaving food out to appease the spirits, or something.

Nice! I am guessing it is something similar to eating garlic. So that the spirits will not eat your or your soul? Maybe?

While I do not believe in spirits or souls at all and keep it only to the respects part, since you mentioned such a tradition...
One other part of our holidays is lighting candles. You light a candle to guide a ghost on its journey. It seems to be that Poles and Czechs are more pedant in this tradition. Especially Poles. If you visit a larger cemetery some of them designated spots for candles. And once the holidays kick in and people visit graves, you have this awesome looking sea of candle fires everywhere :D
Funnily enough and according to a friend, Ukraine actually has an old tradition involving pumpkins but their use was completely unrelated.

It is just looks so much better to me. Than another flood of grinning pumpkins, screeching bats, laughing skeletons and candy. I mean, I would like to know the significance of ALL of that but when I asked in the past it was like: "I am sure there is but it is just cool :D"
